In commemoration of the 2025 World Breastfeeding Week, the Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State held a colourful event aimed at promoting awareness on the importance of breastfeeding, while providing direct support to nursing mothers in the community.

The event, held during the globally recognized first week of August celebration, was graced by the representative of the First Lady of Oyo State, Engr. Mrs. Tamunomini Olufunke Makinde, who extended food items and cash gifts to nursing mothers in Egbeda.

Representing the First Lady, the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, reiterated the significance of this year’s theme: “Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems.” She noted that the theme underscores the necessity of building enduring networks—within families, workplaces, and the wider community—to ensure that breastfeeding mothers receive the necessary encouragement and institutional backing.

Dr. Ajetunmobi praised Governor Seyi Makinde for his proactive maternal health policies, including the implementation of six-month maternity leave for nursing mothers in Oyo State, which she described as a “bold step towards enabling an inclusive and supportive breastfeeding environment.”

“Breastfeeding lays the foundation for lifelong wellness,” the Health Commissioner stated. “It provides optimal nutrition, strengthens immunity, and deepens the bond between mother and child.”

Also addressing attendees, Dr. Muideen Babatunde Olatunji, Executive Secretary of the Oyo State Primary Health Care Board, urged mothers to adopt exclusive breastfeeding practices for the first six months and continue up to two years. He outlined the many health advantages, including reduced infant illness, improved immunity, and enhanced maternal recovery.
