The Lagelu Indigenes Club (LIC) has ushered in the first-ever Lagelu Week with a world press conference at the Lagelu Local Government Secretariat in Iyana-Offa, marking the beginning of a historic celebration aimed at honoring the community’s heroes and fostering sustainable development. The weeklong event, which kicked off on Thursday, is set to culminate in a grand finale of festivities on Saturday, uniting indigenes in a powerful tribute to their heritage and shared vision for progress.
The press conference, attended by local dignitaries, community leaders, and media representatives, set the tone for a series of activities designed to celebrate the rich legacy of Lagelu and galvanize support for communal advancement. The week’s itinerary includes a symbolic visitation to Aba-Oke, the ancestral home of the legendary warrior Lagelu, whose enduring legacy as the founder of Ibadan continues to inspire pride among indigenes.

In his address, Hon. Kamorudeen Mudashiru, the Executive Chairman of Lagelu Local Government, expressed optimism about the initiative’s potential to transform the community. “Though this is only the first edition of Lagelu Week, it is a bold step toward uniting our people and harnessing our collective strength,” he said. “Through this platform, we aim to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps, fostering development that will resonate for generations.” Mudashiru emphasized the event’s role as a catalyst for mobilizing resources and rallying indigenes to contribute to the community’s growth.

A highlight of the press conference was the heartfelt tribute paid to distinguished Lagelu indigenes, both living and departed. The LIC honored past and present council chairmen, revered traditional rulers, and prominent political figures whose contributions have shaped the region’s identity. The recognition served as a poignant reminder of the community’s storied past and the enduring impact of its leaders.
The President of the Lagelu Indigenes Club, Chief. Soji Oguntola, delivered an impassioned speech, describing the initiative as “the honor of a lifetime” for the LIC. “Championing Lagelu Week and paying public homage to our heroes is a privilege we hold dear,” he said. “This is more than a celebration; it is a call to action for every indigene to contribute to the development of our land. We are building a legacy that will inspire future generations.”
Oguntola emphasized the week’s focus on a flagship project: the establishment of a Computer Based Test (CBT) centre to empower youth with access to modern educational tools. The CBT centre project underscores the LIC’s commitment to using Lagelu Week as a catalyst for sustainable development. “This centre will equip our youth to compete in a digital world,” Oguntola noted. “We envision this annual event as a springboard for sustainable development, uniting indigenes to address our most pressing needs.”
Following the press conference, the week’s activities will continue on Friday with a pilgrimage to Aba-Oke, the first place inhabited by Lagelu, the warrior and founder of Ibadan, where indigenes will pay homage to Lagelu legacy at the historic site. The grand finale on Saturday promises a vibrant celebration featuring musical performances and communal bonding, bringing together indigenes from far and wide.
