‎‎According to a report by Punch on Sunday, October 12, 2025, a chieftain of the Labour Party, Tony Akeni, has called on civil society organisations and political reformers to intensify efforts toward achieving genuine electoral reforms in Nigeria.

‎Akeni said the responsibility to secure fair elections rests on reform-minded citizens and civil groups who must push harder to change existing laws.

‎According to him, until the National Assembly amends the Constitution and Electoral Act, the President will continue to use the powers already provided by law to appoint electoral officials.

‎He warned that unless these reforms are carried out, the credibility of future elections could be in doubt.

‎Akeni said it would be difficult for the next general elections to be truly free and fair if the system remains unchanged.

‎The Labour Party spokesman also criticised the attitude of opposition leaders, saying many prefer to limit their protests to social media instead of taking real action.

‎He said posting comments online would not lead to political change or accountability.

‎Akeni urged opposition figures such as Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi to unite and lead a coordinated national movement for reform.

‎He said that visible public demonstrations and civic pressure would have more impact than online debates.

‎”Those who want electoral reforms must push hard enough. What people like Atiku, Obi and other opposition leaders should do is to come together and hit the streets. Tweets are not going to get us out of where we are. It is mass action that can do that,” he argued.
