Firefighters were attacked and injured on Thursday night while responding to a fire outbreak at Biseri Filling Station in the Orogun/Isale Adinni area of Saki, Oyo State.

A distress call was received at exactly 7:45 p.m. on January 1, 2026, through a running caller identified as Alhaji Aiki, reporting that the filling station was engulfed in flames. Acting swiftly, a fire tender with registration number OY 173 A09, conveying four firefighters under the leadership of Chief Fire Superintendent (CFS) Ayegbokiki, departed for the scene at 7:46 p.m.

However, while en route to the incident, the firefighting team was reportedly waylaid by hundreds of angry youths who attacked the crew with dangerous weapons, including cutlasses and stones. During the attack, several firefighters sustained injuries, while the fire truck was extensively vandalised.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that the windscreen of the fire tender was smashed, while the body of the vehicle was badly damaged. The firefighters managed to escape from the scene and subsequently reported the incident at the Saki Divisional Police Headquarters.

To forestall further attacks, the damaged fire tender has been secured at the police station. The police have since commenced investigations into the incident and confirmed that some suspects have been arrested in connection with the attack.

Reacting to the incident, the Chairman and Special Adviser on Fire Services Reforms, Hon. Dr. Akinwande Moroof, condemned the attack and urged members of the public to cooperate with fire service personnel in the discharge of their duties. He warned miscreants against obstructing or assaulting firefighters, stressing that the law would deal decisively with anyone found guilty of attacking firemen while on duty.
