The Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Headquarters, on Saturday averted a major disaster following a petrol tanker accident along Igbaro Circular Road, Idi-Ayunre area of Ibadan.

The incident occurred on Saturday, January 31, 2026, when a distress call was received at exactly 7:20 a.m. via telephone from Mr. Taiwo, reporting a petrol tanker that had overturned at the location.

Firefighters, led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) Adeniyi, swiftly deployed to the scene. Upon arrival, officers discovered a MACK trailer tanker, with registration number HM193IYJ (G), loaded with approximately 50,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), which had swerved off the road and overturned, spilling its contents onto the roadway.

The firemen immediately commenced an articulated firefighting operation using foam chemical compounds, successfully preventing the spilt fuel from igniting and averting a potentially catastrophic fire outbreak. Their timely intervention also stopped the fire from spreading to nearby buildings and properties in the area.

No casualties were recorded in the incident, while properties worth millions of naira were saved through the prompt action of the fire service.

Following the operation, the Officer-in-Charge addressed residents and motorists on road safety and fire prevention, urging members of the public to promptly alert the fire service and provide accurate information whenever an emergency occurs.

He also stressed the importance of installing functional fire extinguishers in vehicles and households to curb fire incidents at their early stages.

The firefighting appliance later returned to the station at 5:30 p.m. and remained on operational standby. Members of the public were reminded to report fire incidents promptly through the agency’s emergency lines: 08067439223, 08054353501, or 615 (toll-free).
