A potential disaster was averted on Thursday morning when the Oyo State Fire Services Agency swiftly responded to a petrol tanker accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ibadan.
The incident occurred at about 9:06 a.m. near the Flower Mill area by the Toll Gate. According to the agency, a distress call was received reporting that a DAF trailer tanker, loaded with 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), had lost control and overturned on the roadway, spilling its contents.
Firefighters, led by Chief Fire Superintendent Adesina, were immediately deployed to the scene. Upon arrival, the team observed that petrol was gushing from the fallen tanker, posing a significant fire risk to commuters and nearby properties.

Emergency responders promptly applied foam chemical compounds to neutralise the spilled fuel and prevent ignition. Their swift intervention successfully contained the situation and averted what could have resulted in a major fire outbreak.
No casualties were recorded in the incident. The agency confirmed that properties worth millions of naira were saved due to the timely response of its personnel. Vehicular movement along the expressway was temporarily disrupted but later restored after the spill was secured and cleared.
Security support during the operation was provided by officers of the Nigeria Police Force from the Toll Gate Division and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Oluyole Division. Fire service personnel returned to their station at about 4:04 p.m. and resumed operational standby.
Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of the agency, Hon. Dr. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, urged motorists to adhere strictly to road safety regulations, particularly when driving on highways. He also stressed the importance of equipping vehicles—especially commercial ones—with functional fire extinguishers to curb fire outbreaks at their early stages.
Members of the public are advised to promptly report fire incidents and provide accurate addresses through the agency’s emergency lines: 08067439223, 08054353501, or the toll-free number 615.
