The Oyo State Fire Services Agency has successfully averted two potentially devastating incidents in Ibadan, responding swiftly to a petrol tanker accident and a residential fire within 24 hours.

The first incident occurred on Friday, February 21, 2026, at about 5:36 p.m., following a distress call reporting a petrol tanker accident at Buso, Idi-Ayunre, Ibadan. Firefighters, led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) Amoo, promptly deployed to the scene.

On arrival, the team found a DAF trailer tanker, registration number LUY 294XA (Ibadan), loaded with 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), which had lost control due to brake failure and overturned on the open road. The tanker’s contents were seen gushing onto the highway, posing a serious fire hazard.

Fire officers immediately applied foam chemical compound to neutralize the spilled petrol and prevent ignition that could have resulted in a major explosion. No casualties were recorded, and properties worth millions of naira were saved due to the timely intervention of the agency. Normal vehicular movement was restored shortly after the operation.

Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force from the Idi-Ayunre Division provided security throughout the emergency response. The firefighting crew returned to the station safely at about 12:30 a.m. on Saturday and resumed operational standby.

Less than 24 hours later, at exactly 11:44 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2026, the agency received another distress call reporting a fire outbreak at Kosi Koro Compound, Oja-Igbo, Ibadan. The fire was said to have engulfed an ancient six-room residential building.

Firefighters, led by Chief Fire Superintendent (CFS) Adekola, swiftly mobilized to the scene. On arrival, the building was already covered in flames and thick smoke. The team acted quickly to contain and extinguish the fire, successfully preventing it from spreading to adjoining buildings.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was caused by an unattended gas cooker, which ignited nearby combustible materials. No casualties were recorded. Officers of the Nigeria Police Force from the Agugu Division were also on ground to provide security during the operation. The crew returned to the station at about 12:45 p.m. and remained on standby.

Reacting to the incidents, the Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Agency, Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, cautioned drivers against reckless driving, the use of hard drugs, and alcohol consumption, stressing that such habits often lead to avoidable accidents and loss of lives and property.

He also urged residents to adhere strictly to fire safety measures, particularly when using domestic gas and electrical appliances. According to him, electrical devices should be unplugged when not in use, especially before bedtime, and fire extinguishers should be installed in both commercial vehicles and homes to curb fire incidents at the early stage.

The agency encouraged members of the public to promptly report emergencies and provide accurate addresses through its emergency lines: 08067439223, 08054353501, or toll-free number 615.
