

The Oyo State Fire Services Agency has successfully rescued two elderly men who were trapped inside a well containing toxic gas in the Jegede area of Ibadan.
The incident occurred at about 9:24 a.m. on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at No. 50 Asigi, Elebolo Zone 1, Jegede, in Ibadan. The emergency was reported via a telephone call indicating that individuals had fallen into a well at the location.

According to the agency, a rescue team led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) Amoo was immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered two men, aged approximately 62 and 76, trapped inside the well, which was reportedly filled with ammonia gas. The victims were said to have been working on the well when the incident occurred.


The firefighters promptly carried out a coordinated rescue operation, securing the victims with safety knots and successfully bringing them out alive.
Both men were rescued without injury and have since been reunited with their families in stable condition. No casualties were recorded.
Speaking after the operation, the officer in charge advised residents to promptly contact emergency services and provide accurate location details in the event of any emergency.
The rescue team returned safely to the station at about 1:20 p.m. and remained on standby for further duties.
Also commenting on the incident, the Special Adviser on Fire Service Reform and Chairman of the agency, Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, emphasized the importance of safety awareness. He urged residents to avoid hazardous activities that could endanger lives and property, stressing that “life has no duplicate.”
He further highlighted the need for functional fire extinguishers in homes and commercial buildings, and encouraged the public to report emergencies through the agency’s hotlines.
