The Oyo State Fire Services Agency on Saturday successfully averted a potential fire disaster following a petrol tanker accident along the Kajorepo axis of the Ojoo–Iwo Road Expressway in Ibadan.
The incident was reported at about 8:03 a.m. through a telephone call and by Sade Ajibola, a Chief Superintendent of Police, alerting the agency to the accident at the scene.
According to the agency, firefighters led by Adisa, an Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent, promptly mobilised to the location after receiving the distress call.

On arrival, emergency responders discovered a Howo trailer tanker with registration number GGE 374 XC, loaded with 50,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), had swerved off the road, resulting in a significant fuel spill as its contents gushed onto the surrounding area.
Fire personnel immediately deployed chemical foam compounds to blanket the vicinity and neutralise the flammable fuel, thereby preventing a possible fire outbreak or explosion.
After successfully containing the situation and ensuring the area was safe, the fire service crew returned to the station at about 6:43 p.m., with their equipment placed back on standby.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman of the agency, Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, commended the firefighters for their swift response and professionalism, noting that their prompt intervention prevented a potential explosion.
He also urged tanker drivers to avoid reckless driving and strictly adhere to road safety regulations. In addition, he emphasised the importance of installing fire extinguishers in buildings to help control fire outbreaks at the early stage.
Residents were also encouraged to promptly report fire incidents and provide accurate addresses when contacting emergency responders.
The agency advised the public to reach the Oyo State Fire Service emergency lines on 08067439223, 08054353501, or 615 (toll-free) for rapid response to fire emergencies.
