The Oyo State Fire Services Agency has successfully contained a fire outbreak that engulfed part of a residential building at No. 3, Adeoya Layout, Unity Crescent, Akobo, Ibadan, preventing what could have resulted in a major disaster.
The incident occurred on Sunday, July 26, 2026, and was reported to the agency at exactly 9:14 a.m. through a telephone call by PFSII Falade.
Following the distress call, a team of firefighters led by the Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS), Oyeniyi Taofiq, was immediately deployed to the scene.
On arrival, the firefighters discovered that a three-bedroom flat located on the upper floor of a four-flat private residential building had been completely engulfed in flames, with thick smoke emanating from the affected apartment.
The emergency responders swiftly commenced firefighting operations, successfully containing the blaze and preventing it from spreading to other flats and adjoining buildings within the neighbourhood.
The agency confirmed that no life was lost and no injuries were recorded during the incident.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was caused by an electrical surge from an appliance that had been left plugged in and unattended.
After extinguishing the fire, the Officer-in-Charge educated residents, occupants and sympathisers on essential fire prevention measures, stressing the importance of switching off and unplugging electrical appliances when they are not in use.
The firefighting team completed the operation and returned safely to the station at 5:55 p.m., remaining on standby for emergency response.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Hon. Dr. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, urged residents of the state to remain vigilant and cultivate a strong fire safety culture to prevent avoidable fire outbreaks.
He also appealed to members of the public to promptly report fire emergencies and provide accurate addresses to facilitate quick response by firefighters.
