The Oyo State Fire Services Agency Headquarters has successfully contained a major fire outbreak at SAO Filling Station, Onireke area of Ibadan, averting what could have resulted in a devastating inferno.

According to the Agency, the distressed call was received on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at exactly 7:34 p.m. via a telephone report by Mr. Steven Henry, indicating that a petrol station was engulfed by fire at the указан address.

Firefighters led by Chief Fire Superintendent (CFS) Adesina Olusoji were promptly deployed to the scene. Upon arrival, the officers encountered a MACK trailer tanker loaded with 45,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), alongside two underground storage tanks already engulfed by flames.

The fire crew swiftly commenced coordinated firefighting operations, deploying articulated attack techniques and professional expertise, supported by foam chemical compounds, to prevent the fire from escalating into a major explosion. The operation lasted several hours before the blaze was completely extinguished.

The firefighting effort was jointly executed in collaboration with the Federal Fire Service, SWEETCO Fire Brigade, Zartech Fire Brigade, and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Fire Brigade. Security support provided by the Nigerian Police Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan, was also commended for ensuring effective crowd and scene control throughout the operation.

No casualties were recorded during the incident. Preliminary findings attributed the fire outbreak to sparks generated during the decanting of fuel from the tanker truck into the underground storage tanks.

He urged filling station owners to prioritise fire safety certification before, during, and after construction, stressing that safety regulations must be strictly adhered to during decanting and transloading operations.

Dr. Akinwande further emphasised the importance of installing functional fire extinguishers in all commercial premises and households to enable early response and prevent fire outbreaks from escalating.
