A six-month-old baby was rescued alive by personnel of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency after a residential building was engulfed by fire at Olomi’s Compound in Ogbomoso on Saturday night.
According to the Agency, the Ogbomoso Zonal Command received a distress call at about 8:38 p.m. through a telephone report by Mr. Abiodun Mayowa, informing firefighters of a raging fire at the residence.

Responding swiftly, the firefighting team led by PFS II Oluwaleye arrived at the scene to find the ground floor of a private one-storey building, comprising three rooms, already engulfed in flames.

The firefighters immediately launched an intensive firefighting operation, successfully containing the inferno and preventing it from spreading to the upper floor of the building as well as neighbouring properties.
In the course of the rescue operation, the team safely evacuated a six-month-old baby trapped inside the burning building, with the infant rescued alive and unharmed.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was caused by an unattended gas leak.
Following the successful operation, the Officer-in-Charge conducted a fire safety awareness session for the occupants of the building and residents in the area, educating them on preventive measures and the safe handling of cooking gas and other fire hazards to avert similar incidents.
The firefighting crew concluded the operation and returned safely to the station at about 10:13 p.m., with the fire appliance restored to operational standby.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser and Chairman on Fire Services Reform, Hon. Dr. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, urged residents to observe basic fire safety precautions by ensuring the proper installation, regular inspection and maintenance of LPG cylinders and gas appliances.
He also advised homeowners, business operators and occupants of public buildings to equip their premises with appropriate fire extinguishers to enable prompt response to fire outbreaks before emergency responders arrive.
The Agency further appealed to members of the public to report fire emergencies promptly, provide accurate location details, and contact the Oyo State Fire Services Agency through its emergency lines: 08067439223, 08054353501, or 615 (toll-free).
