The Oyo State Fire Services Agency has recorded three major emergency interventions across Ibadan and Ogbomoso, successfully containing two separate fire outbreaks and averting a potentially devastating explosion involving a petroleum tanker laden with 33,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).
The incidents, which occurred between Friday, September 11, and Saturday, September 12, 2026, were swiftly responded to by personnel of the Agency, preventing further damage to lives and property.
The first incident was reported at about 4:37 p.m. on Friday, September 11, following a distress call from Mr. Olaolu over a fire outbreak at Moyosore Nursery and Primary School, Asubiojo Street, Olaogun area of Ibadan.
On arrival at the scene, a firefighting crew led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) Oyeniyi discovered that the living room of a two-bedroom flat on the ground floor of an adjoining residential building had been engulfed by flames and thick smoke.
The firefighters immediately commenced operations and successfully brought the fire under control, preventing it from spreading to other sections of the building and neighbouring properties.
Preliminary findings indicated that the fire was suspected to have been caused by an electrical appliance that was left plugged in and unattended. No casualty was recorded, while the fire was confined to the living room.
The firefighting appliance returned safely to the station at about 5:40 p.m. and was placed on operational standby. The Agency also commended personnel of the Nigerian Police Force from Olaogun Police Station for providing adequate security during the operation.
In a related incident in the early hours of Saturday, September 12, the Agency responded to a shop fire at Block 9, Police Barracks Training School, Eleyele, Ibadan, following a distress call received at about 4:28 a.m. through SP Atilola.
The firefighting team, again led by ACFS Oyeniyi, found one of five prefabricated shops in a row engulfed in flames, with thick smoke billowing from the affected premises.
The crew quickly deployed firefighting equipment and successfully contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to the adjoining shops and other properties.
The incident was attributed to an electrical surge from the affected shop, which ignited combustible materials within the premises. No casualty was recorded, while substantial property was reportedly saved from destruction.
Following the operation, the Officer-in-Charge delivered a fire-safety lecture to occupants and sympathisers, stressing the need for vigilance and the availability of functional fire extinguishers in shops and other premises.
The fire appliance returned safely to the station at about 5:18 a.m. and remained on operational standby.
Meanwhile, in Ogbomoso, the Agency on Friday, September 11, successfully averted a possible explosion involving a petroleum tanker that fell by the roadside near the LAUTECH College of Health Sciences, opposite Recreation Club.
The distress call was received at about 1:39 p.m. from a caller, including Mr. Adebowale A., Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), reporting the tanker accident.
Fire service personnel led by HFS Wahab A. promptly mobilised to the scene, where they found a Mack trailer tanker, with registration number AFN 467 XA (Kwara), loaded with approximately 33,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), which had lost control and fallen by the roadside, resulting in the spillage of its contents.
Recognising the high risk of ignition and possible explosion, the firefighters immediately commenced a coordinated emergency response. The affected area was blanketed with foam chemical compounds to suppress any possible ignition and safeguard lives and property in the vicinity.
No casualty was recorded.
A preliminary investigation attributed the tanker accident to brake failure. The fire appliance returned safely to the station at about 6:26 p.m. and was placed on operational standby.
Reacting to the incidents, the Special Adviser on Fire Services Reform and Chairman, Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Hon. Dr. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, urged residents, traders, motorists and other members of the public to remain vigilant and fire-conscious at all times.
He advised households and business owners to install and maintain functional fire extinguishers and to avoid leaving electrical appliances unattended while plugged into power sources.
Dr. Akinwande also called on motorists to prioritise regular vehicle maintenance, particularly the braking system, and to strictly observe traffic regulations. He cautioned drivers against overspeeding, fatigue driving and reckless manoeuvres capable of endangering lives and property.
He further urged members of the public to promptly report fire and rescue emergencies and, most importantly, provide accurate addresses to enable firefighters to respond quickly and effectively.
