The Oyo State Fire Services Agency has successfully contained three separate fire incidents in Ibadan and Oyo town, preventing the destruction of properties worth millions of naira.
The incidents, which occurred between Saturday night and Sunday morning, affected shops, a generator house, and a residential building. No casualty was recorded in any of the incidents.

In the first incident, firefighters from the Agency’s Headquarters responded to a distress call at about 9:22 p.m. on Saturday regarding shops engulfed by fire at Faruq Road, opposite Sudit Oil Company, Soka, Ibadan.

The firemen, led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) Bamidele, swiftly mobilised to the scene, where two out of 13 prefabricated shops had already been consumed by flames and thick smoke. The officers immediately launched a coordinated operation and successfully prevented the fire from spreading to nearby shops.
According to the agency, preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was caused by the improper disposal of leftover firewood embers left unattended.
In another incident, officers from the Headquarters Command extinguished a fire outbreak involving a generator house located opposite the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER), along UI-Ojoo Road, Ibadan.
The distress call was received at about 6:11 a.m. on Sunday through a telephone call by one Mr. Adesina. Firefighters led by ACFS Oyeniyi arrived at the scene to find the generator house of a hotel building engulfed in flames and thick smoke.
The fire crew quickly curtailed the spread of the inferno to the main hotel structure. The agency attributed the incident to electrical sparks from a control switch panel, which ignited nearby combustible materials and set the generator ablaze.
Similarly, the Oyo Zonal Command of the agency attended to a residential fire incident at Oluokun’s House beside Similolu Chemist, Old Cele Area, Oyo town.
The emergency was reported at about 4:02 a.m. on Sunday through a running call by Mr. Azeez Hammed. Fire officers led by FO II Adepoju Muideen responded promptly to the scene, where the last two rooms and kitchen of an eight-room residential building were engulfed by fire and smoke.
The firefighters succeeded in restricting the inferno from spreading to other parts of the building. The agency disclosed that the fire resulted from unattended cooking gas which ignited nearby combustible materials.
The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency and Special Adviser on Fire Service Reform, Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, urged residents to always observe fire safety measures and promptly contact the agency at the early stage of any fire outbreak before it escalates.
He also stressed the importance of installing functional fire extinguishers in homes and commercial buildings to contain fires at the incipient stage.
Residents were advised to report emergencies through the agency’s emergency lines: 08067439223, 08054353501, or the toll-free line, 615.
