The Oyo State Fire Services Agency has successfully contained a fire outbreak that engulfed two lock-up shops at No. 348 ZI/E Milo Zone, Bola Ige International Market, New Gbagi, Ibadan.
The incident was reported at about 12:25 p.m. on Monday, August 17, 2026, following a distress call from Mrs. Ola, who alerted the agency to the fire.
A firefighting team led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) Adeniyi promptly mobilised to the scene. Upon arrival, the officers discovered that two of the nine shops in a row had been engulfed by flames, with thick smoke billowing from the affected premises.
The firefighters immediately commenced operations and successfully brought the situation under control, preventing the fire from spreading to adjoining shops and other properties within the market.
No casualty was recorded in the incident, while the agency said a post-fire investigation was underway to determine the cause of the outbreak.
Following the operation, the Officer-in-Charge delivered a brief fire-safety lecture to traders, occupants and sympathisers, stressing the importance of taking necessary precautions to prevent future fire incidents.
The firefighting appliance returned safely to the station at 1:41 p.m. and was placed on standby for further emergencies.
The Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Hon. Dr. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, urged members of the public, particularly traders, to remain vigilant and fire-conscious at all times.
Akinwande also advised traders to equip their shops with appropriate fire extinguishers and ensure that they are readily accessible for immediate use in case of emergencies.
The agency further appealed to members of the public to report fire incidents promptly and provide accurate addresses to facilitate swift response by firefighters.
