The prompt intervention of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency has averted a potentially devastating fire outbreak at Onipasan, Araromi Market, Gate, Ibadan.
The incident occurred late Saturday night, August 29, 2026, with the Agency receiving a distress call at about 11:05 p.m. from a resident identified as Mr. Ayobami.
Following the alert, a firefighting crew led by Chief Fire Superintendent (CFS) Adesina was immediately mobilised to the scene.
On arrival, the firefighters found disused tyres and spare parts engulfed in flames, with the fire threatening adjoining shops and nearby properties within the market.
The crew promptly commenced firefighting operations and requested additional support from the Fire Service Headquarters. In response, another fire truck was deployed to reinforce the operation.
Working in coordination, the firefighting teams successfully contained and extinguished the blaze before it could spread to the adjoining shops and other properties, thereby preventing what could have resulted in extensive damage.
No casualty was recorded in the incident.
Preliminary investigation indicated that the fire may have been caused by indiscriminate burning of electrical cables to extract copper wires. The activity was reportedly left unattended, allowing the flames to spread to the combustible materials in the area.
The firefighting appliances returned safely to the station at about 1:21 a.m. on Sunday, August 30, and were immediately placed on operational standby.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Hon. Dr. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report fire emergencies promptly to the Fire Service.
Akinwande also stressed the importance of providing and maintaining functional fire extinguishers in shops, markets, homes and other facilities, noting that the early application of appropriate firefighting equipment could help suppress fires at their incipient stages and prevent them from escalating into major disasters.
He further appealed to members of the public to provide clear, accurate and easily identifiable addresses when reporting emergencies to enable firefighters to locate incident sites and respond without delay.
