The Oyo State Fire Services Agency recorded a busy day of emergency operations on Wednesday, successfully averting a potential diesel tanker explosion and containing two separate fire incidents in Ibadan without any loss of life.

The first incident occurred at about 6:42 a.m. along the Bodija axis of the Iwo Road/Ojoo Expressway, where a Mack trailer tanker with registration number FGE 162ZH (Kano), loaded with 45,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), collided with a Volvo truck marked MUN 829ZA.

According to the Agency, fire personnel led by PFS Adigun swiftly mobilised to the scene following a distress call placed by Engr. Adeleke Ismail. Upon arrival, officers discovered that a large quantity of diesel had spilled onto the road as a result of the collision, posing a serious explosion threat.

The firefighters immediately deployed foam chemical compounds across the affected area to prevent ignition and successfully contained the situation. Normal vehicular movement and social activities were later restored in the area, while no casualty was recorded. The operation was concluded successfully with properties worth millions of naira saved from destruction.

In a separate incident at about 2:19 p.m., the Agency responded to a fire outbreak at Arowona Street, Amuloko, Ibadan, following a distress call made by one Mr. Mustafa. Officers led by ACFS Amoo arrived at the scene to find a five-room private residential building engulfed in flames.

The fire was promptly curtailed, preventing it from spreading to adjoining buildings and nearby properties. Preliminary findings revealed that the incident was caused by sparks from an electrical appliance left plugged in unattended. No casualty was recorded.

Barely hours later, at about 5:22 p.m., another fire incident was reported beside OBX Filling Station in the Oke Ado area of Ibadan. The fire affected the upper floor of an old residential structure being used for commercial purposes.

Firefighters led by CFS Adekola swiftly responded to the emergency and successfully prevented the inferno from spreading to the ground floor and neighbouring structures. The Agency attributed the incident to a power surge from an unattended electrical appliance, which ignited nearby combustible materials. No life was lost in the incident.

Speaking on the incidents, the Special Adviser on Fire Services Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Hon. Dr. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, urged residents and motorists to be more safety conscious, especially during the Sallah celebration period.

He stressed the importance of installing fire extinguishers in homes, offices and vehicles, while also advocating regular training for staff and drivers on the proper use of firefighting equipment to minimise fire-related emergencies.

The Agency further appealed to members of the public to promptly report fire incidents and provide accurate addresses through its emergency lines: 08067439223, 08054353501, or the toll-free line 615.
