The Executive Chairman of Ibadan South West Local Government, Honourable Kehinde Akande, has charged National Youth Service Corps members to become ambassadors of unity by promoting social-cultural understanding and national cohesion across Nigeria.

Hon. Akande gave the charge on Saturday at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Iseyin, where he attended the Cultural Diversity Day as the Special Guest of Honour. The event brought together corps members from various platoons to showcase Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.

The council boss described cultural diversity as Nigeria’s greatest strength, stressing that the NYSC scheme remains a veritable platform for building a united and tolerant society.

“The essence of your service year goes beyond community development. It is also about learning, respecting, and celebrating our differences,” Hon. Akande said. “As you exhibit the cultures of Ijebuland, Oyo, Igbo, Kanuri, Tiv, and other tribes today, you are promoting the social cohesion that our country needs to thrive.”

He commended the corps members for their enthusiasm and creativity in presenting the traditions, attire, music, and cuisines of the different ethnic groups, noting that such engagements break down stereotypes and foster mutual respect.

Also in attendance was the Oyo State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Honourable Wasiu Olatunbosun. His presence underscored the state government’s commitment to promoting cultural heritage and youth engagement in nation-building.

The State Coordinator of the NYSC in Oyo State, Mr. Kayode Ayo Peters, acknowledged Hon. Akande’s presence and contributions to the programme. He appreciated the chairman for honoring the invitation and for his continued support for corps members serving in Ibadan South West.

“We are grateful to Hon. Akande for his time, support, and for always identifying with the NYSC family in Oyo State,” Mr. Peters said.

Dignitaries at the event included representatives of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, who served as Father of the Day. In his goodwill message delivered by a palace representative, the monarch praised NYSC for sustaining the culture of unity through inter-tribal interaction.

The highlight of the day was a colourful cultural parade by Platoon 1 to Platoon 10. Each platoon exhibited the unique heritage of Ijebuland, Oyo, Igbo, Kanuri, Tiv, and other Nigerian tribes through dance, drama, traditional attires, and exhibitions.

Stakeholders described the event as a timely reminder of the role of young Nigerians in sustaining peace, tolerance, and national integration.
