…….Oyo firefighters battle blaze for hours, prevent spread to adjoining buildings
A midnight fire caused by an electrical surge from an unattended appliance has gutted a three-bedroom residential apartment at No. 4 London Court, Goodwill Estate, Alaaka, Elebu, Ibadan.
The incident was reported to the Oyo State Fire Services Agency at about 11:50 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2026, through a telephone distress call.
Following the report, a team of firefighters led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) Bamidele promptly responded to the scene.
On arrival, the fire crew met the private residential building engulfed in flames, with thick smoke billowing from the affected apartment. The firefighters immediately commenced firefighting operations and successfully prevented the inferno from spreading to adjoining buildings and properties.
No casualty was recorded in the incident.
According to the Agency, preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was caused by an electrical surge from an appliance that had been plugged in and left unattended.
After successfully bringing the fire under control, the Officer-in-Charge delivered a brief fire safety lecture to the occupants and sympathisers, stressing the need for vigilance and proper handling of electrical appliances.
The firefighting appliance returned safely to the station at about 4:45 a.m. on Sunday, July 19, 2026, and was placed on standby for further emergency response.
The Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Hon. Dr. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, urged members of the public to remain vigilant and fire-conscious at all times.
He also advised residents to promptly report fire incidents and provide accurate addresses to enable firefighters to respond swiftly and effectively.
