Recent comments and insinuations suggesting that Kabiyesi, Oba Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, is being partisan in Nigerian politics deserve a calm and thoughtful response.
The revered stool of the Olubadan is an institution that transcends political parties, personal interests and temporary political differences. Kabiyesi is not the property of any political party or political group; he is the father of all. As Olubadan of Ibadanland, his responsibility and position extend to every son and daughter of Ibadan, irrespective of political affiliation, social status, religion or personal ideology.
It is therefore important that we distinguish between the personal political history of a traditional ruler and the sacred responsibilities attached to the stool he occupies. Kabiyesi Oba Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja has a well-known history of public service and political participation. However, that history should not automatically be interpreted as evidence that the revered stool of Olubadan has become partisan.
Indeed, Baba’s past record in public life speaks for itself. Those who have followed his journey will know that he has consistently demonstrated courage, principled leadership and commitment to the development and advancement of Ibadanland and Oyo State. His long experience in public affairs should be seen as an asset that can contribute positively to the progress of our people, rather than as a reason to question his loyalty to the entire Ibadan community.
We must also remember that traditional institutions are expected to provide wisdom, stability and unity, especially in times when political disagreements are becoming increasingly intense. The Olubadan stool should therefore be approached with the dignity and respect that it deserves.
Politics will come and go, but the Olubadan institution will remain. Political parties will contest elections, politicians will disagree, and governments will change, but the traditional institution of the Olubadan remains a symbol of the history, culture, unity and identity of Ibadanland.
For this reason, I appeal to all sons and daughters of Ibadanland, political actors and members of the public to exercise restraint in their comments concerning Kabiyesi. Constructive criticism is part of democratic society, but such criticism should not descend into personal attacks, insults or statements capable of diminishing the dignity of the revered stool.
Let us disagree where necessary, but let us do so with respect for our elders, respect for our culture and respect for the institution of the Olubadan.
Kabiyesi is Baba to all of us. Those who support one political party today may support another tomorrow, but our traditional institutions remain part of our collective heritage.
The Olubadan stool belongs to Ibadanland and must be protected by all of us.
Let us therefore give Kabiyesi Oba Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja the respect befitting the Olubadan of Ibadanland, while allowing him to discharge his responsibilities as a father, elder statesman and custodian of our people’s heritage.
Long live the Olubadan of Ibadanland.
Long live Ibadanland.
Long live the people of Ibadan.
