The Oyo State Fire Services Agency has recorded a series of successful emergency interventions across Oyo, Ibadan and Eruwa, containing three separate fire outbreaks and averting a potentially devastating petroleum tanker explosion within a 24-hour period.
The incidents, which occurred between Tuesday, September 15 and Wednesday, September 16, 2026, involved a market fire at Akunlemu Market, Oyo; a petroleum tanker accident along New Moniya Road, Ibadan; a hotel and lounge fire along the Abayomi-Iwo Road axis of Ibadan; and a residential building fire at Eleruwa Estate, Eruwa.
At about 10:16 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15, the Agency received a distress call reporting a fire outbreak at shops in Akunlemu Market, opposite Bismillahi Filling Station, along the Oyo/Ogbomoso Old Road.
A firefighting team led by PFS I Makinde promptly mobilised to the scene, where the affected shops were already engulfed in flames. The firefighters swiftly commenced operations and successfully brought the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading to other shops and adjoining properties.
No casualty was recorded. Preliminary investigation indicated that the fire was caused by a coal pot that had not been properly extinguished before the shop was vacated. Residual heat from the coal pot reportedly ignited nearby combustible materials.
Following the operation, CFS Adeduntan delivered a fire prevention and safety awareness lecture to occupants and members of the public on the proper handling and complete extinguishment of sources of ignition.
Earlier on the same day, at about 9:56 a.m., the Agency responded to a petroleum tanker accident near a Primary Health Centre along New Moniya Road, Ibadan.
The tanker, an FONTO trailer with registration number FKJ 843 XL (Lagos), was carrying approximately 45,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) when it reportedly swerved off the road and entered a nearby ditch.
Firefighters led by ACFS Adigun immediately deployed foam chemical compound to blanket the spilled petroleum product and successfully prevented the situation from escalating into an explosion.
No casualty was recorded. Preliminary information attributed the accident to a suspected braking-system failure.
Personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps, Moniya Division; Nigeria Police Force, Moniya Divisional Headquarters; Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Moniya Command; and Amotekun Corps, Moniya, were also present to maintain law and order and support the emergency operation.
On Wednesday, September 16, at about 5:00 a.m., another distress call alerted the Agency to a fire at No. 2 Abigeal Makinde Close, Abayomi, Iwo Road, Ibadan.
A firefighting team led by ACFS Adisa arrived at the scene and found a storey building comprising four rooms and being used as a hotel and lounge engulfed in flames, with thick smoke billowing from the premises.
The firefighters immediately commenced a coordinated firefighting operation and successfully contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings and other properties.
No casualty was recorded. The suspected cause of the fire was sparks from a solar inverter, which reportedly ignited combustible materials within the premises.
Later the same day, at about 1:35 p.m., the Eruwa Command of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency received a distress call concerning a house fire at Eleruwa Estate, off Gaa Road, Sango, Eruwa.
Firefighters led by PFS I Peluola promptly deployed to the location and discovered that the third room of a six-room private residential building had been engulfed by flames and thick smoke.
The crew launched a coordinated attack and successfully restricted the fire to the affected area, preventing it from spreading to other rooms and properties. No casualty was recorded, while properties estimated at millions of naira were reportedly saved.
Preliminary findings indicated that the fire was caused by electrical sparks that ignited combustible materials in the room.
In all four incidents, the fire service personnel successfully brought the emergencies under control, with no fatalities or injuries recorded.
The Special Adviser on Fire Services Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Hon. Dr. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, commended the prompt response of the firefighters and urged residents to remain vigilant and fire-conscious.
He advised members of the public to regularly maintain electrical appliances, vehicles and other equipment capable of causing fire, while also urging motorists to observe road traffic regulations to reduce the risk of accidents.
Akinwande further stressed the importance of installing and maintaining functional fire extinguishers and other first-aid firefighting equipment in homes, shops, offices and other public and commercial premises to enable occupants tackle fires at their incipient stages.
He also urged residents to promptly report fire incidents and provide accurate locations to enable firefighters to respond quickly.
