The Executive Chairman of Ibadan South-West Local Government, Honourable Kehinde Akande, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to qualitative education with the distribution of educational materials to students across the local government area as part of support to kickstart the new academic session.
The distribution ceremony attracted students from public primary and secondary schools within the council, parents, teachers, education stakeholders, and political functionaries.
Hundreds of students benefited from the large consignments of educational materials which included thousands of exercise books, recommended textbooks, branded school bags, mathematical sets, English dictionaries, pens, pencils, and other writing materials.
Addressing the gathering, Hon. Kehinde Akande said education remains the bedrock of development and a top priority of his administration. He noted that the initiative was designed to ease the financial burden on parents, encourage school enrollment and retention, and motivate students to excel academically as they resume a new term.
According to him, “No child in Ibadan South-West should be out of school because of lack of learning materials. Education is the best legacy we can give to our children. This is our modest way of supporting parents and investing in the future of our great local government. We will continue to do more to ensure our students compete favourably with their peers anywhere in the world.”
He added that his administration has consistently invested in the education sector through school renovations, provision of furniture, support for teachers, and sponsorship of educational programmes, assuring that more interventions are still coming before the end of his tenure.
In his remarks, the Inspector General for Education in Oyo State, Mr. Aderibigbe Oluwatosin, who witnessed the distribution, commended Hon. Akande for his visionary leadership and sustained contribution to the academic development of students.
Mr. Aderibigbe described the gesture as timely, impactful and worthy of emulation by other council chairmen in the state. He said the intervention aligns with the educational transformation agenda of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration, which places premium on access to quality education for every child.
“This is highly commendable. Hon. Kehinde Akande has shown that he is a true lover of education. This support will go a long way in boosting the morale of these students and helping them start the new session on a strong note. On behalf of the Ministry, we appreciate this laudable effort,” he said.
Some of the beneficiary students who spoke at the event expressed joy and gratitude to the Chairman, noting that the materials came at the right time. Parents present also lauded the council boss, describing him as a people-oriented leader who understands the needs of the grassroots.
The distribution of educational materials is one of several people-centered programmes implemented by the Hon. Kehinde Akande-led administration since assumption of office, which have continued to earn him praise from residents of Ibadan South-West Local Government.
