…………….. Akinwande Warns Motorists Against Poor Vehicle Maintenance

The Oyo State Fire Services Agency has responded to two separate road accidents in Jobele, Afijio Local Government Area, and along the Ojoo-Iwo Road Expressway in Ibadan, rescuing 25 persons and recovering eight people from the scenes.

The incidents, which occurred on Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18, 2026, involved a petrol-free diesel tanker transporting 45,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and a collision between a commercial bus and a stationary trailer, respectively.

In the first incident, which occurred at about 11:42 a.m. on Saturday, the agency received a distress call concerning a tanker accident in the Ajao area of the Ojoo-Iwo Road Expressway, Ibadan.

Fire service officers led by Chief Fire Superintendent Adedeji promptly mobilised to the scene, where they discovered that a tanker with registration number B14R316XB, registered in Abuja, had lost control, somersaulted and crashed into a Nissan Micra with registration number AGG669XK, registered in Oyo State. The tanker also collided with three other vehicles whose registration numbers were not immediately established.

The tanker was carrying 45,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil when the accident occurred. In a swift response, the fire crew sprayed the affected environment to minimise the risk of ignition and prevent a possible fire outbreak.

According to the agency’s report, five persons were recovered and handed over to officers from the Kajorepo Divisional Police Headquarters, while 10 others were rescued alive. The incident was attributed to brake failure on the tanker.

The operation also attracted the Deputy Director of Operations of the agency, Assistant Chief Fire Operations Awoyemi Adesina Oluwaseyi; a team from the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), led by its General Manager, Mr Ayoade Adeoye; and officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps from the Moniya Unit Command, led by DRS S. Boladale.

In a separate incident in the early hours of Sunday, the agency responded to a vehicle fire in front of the Afijio Local Government Secretariat, Jobele, following a distress call received at about 12:20 a.m.

The fire officers, led by Principal Fire Superintendent I Makinde Kunle, arrived at the scene and discovered that a J5 bus conveying bakery machines had rammed into the rear of a stationary DAF trailer loaded with synthetic materials. Both vehicles, whose registration numbers were not immediately known, were engulfed in flames.

The crew launched a coordinated firefighting operation using chemical compounds, successfully containing the fire and preventing it from spreading to nearby properties. The operation lasted several hours before the fire was completely extinguished.

The agency reported that three persons were recovered burnt, while five others were rescued alive with minor injuries. The crash was attributed to the J5 bus driver losing control and colliding with the trailer parked by the roadside.

Personnel of the Federal Fire Service, Oyo Command; the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC); the Amotekun Corps, Jobele Unit; and officers from the Jobele Divisional Police Headquarters assisted in the operation.

The agency’s firefighting appliance returned safely to the station at 9:17 a.m. on Sunday after the Jobele operation, while the team deployed to the tanker accident returned at 4:37 p.m. on Saturday. Both crews subsequently resumed operational standby.
