The Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Ogbomoso Zonal Command, on Friday rescued a 25-year-old man who reportedly fell into a soakaway at Kinnira area, opposite Zion Christian Academy School, Ogbomoso.
According to the agency, the distress call was received at exactly 7:41 p.m. through a passerby and one Mr. John Onigbide, who alerted firefighters to the incident.

In a swift response, fire service personnel led by Chief Fire Superintendent (CFS) Dairo were immediately deployed to the scene, where they discovered that the victim had become trapped inside the soakaway.

The rescue team promptly commenced operations using standard rescue knots and other professional procedures to safely recover the victim within a short period.
Following the successful rescue, the victim was handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Owode Division, Ogbomoso.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim had attempted to inspect storage tanks located near the soakaway to determine the water level when he accidentally lost his balance while crossing the area and fell into the pit.
The agency confirmed that its personnel returned safely to the station after the operation and remained on operational standby.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser on Fire Services Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Hon. Dr. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, urged residents to be more safety conscious around soakaways, wells, abandoned pits and other hazardous areas within residential communities.
He further advised property owners and residents to ensure that such openings are properly covered and secured to prevent avoidable accidents and possible loss of lives.
The agency also encouraged members of the public to promptly report fire or rescue emergencies, provide accurate addresses, and contact the Fire Service through its emergency lines: 08067439223, 08054353501, or the toll-free number 615.
