The Oyo State Fire Services Agency has successfully contained an early morning fire outbreak that engulfed two shops behind the IBEDC Office in the Dugbe area of Ibadan, preventing the inferno from spreading to 18 other adjoining shops.
According to the Agency, the distress call was received at exactly 1:54 a.m. on Friday, July 31, 2026, through a telephone call made by one Bar. Shonde.
Following the alert, firefighters led by the Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS), Amoo, immediately mobilised to the scene, where they met two out of a row of twenty prefabricated shops already engulfed in flames, with thick smoke billowing from the affected structures.
The fire crew swiftly commenced firefighting operations and succeeded in bringing the blaze under control within a short time, completely extinguishing the fire and preventing it from spreading to the remaining 18 shops and nearby properties.
No casualty was recorded during the incident.
Preliminary investigations by the Agency revealed that the fire was triggered by electric sparks from a nearby electricity pole, which ignited combustible materials close to the shops.
Following the successful operation, the officer in charge conducted a brief fire safety awareness session for traders and residents, urging members of the public to promptly notify the Fire Service whenever a fire emergency occurs to ensure rapid intervention and minimise damage.
The firefighting team returned safely to the station at about 3:16 a.m. and resumed operational standby.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Hon. Dr. Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, commended the swift response of the firefighters and called on shop owners and business operators to remain vigilant and adopt preventive fire safety measures.
He stressed the importance of installing functional fire extinguishers in every shop to enable occupants tackle minor fire outbreaks before they escalate into major disasters.
