The grand finale of the 2026 Summer School Programme in Ibadan South West Local Government was held on Thursday at UMC with top government officials, education stakeholders, political functionaries and career officers in attendance.
Present at the event were the Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Wasilat Adegoke; Executive Chairman of TESCOM, Dr. Olubukola Oladipo; Inspector General of Education in Oyo State, Mr. Tosin Aderibigbe; and the Education Secretary, Ibadan South West, Mrs. Morenike Adeniran. The programme was hosted under the leadership of the Chairman of Ibadan South West Local Government, Honourable Kehinde Akande.
The summer school, which ran for several weeks, was designed to keep pupils and students productively engaged during the holiday through academic coaching, talent development, sports, and life skills training.
In her remarks, Hon. Wasilat Adegoke commended Hon. Akande for the initiative, noting that it aligns with the Oyo State Government’s commitment to youth development. She urged the students to sustain the learning spirit and to embrace sports and other extracurricular activities to build discipline and confidence.
Dr. Olubukola Oladipo of TESCOM lauded the quality of instruction and the large turnout of students. She said programmes like this complement the state government’s efforts to strengthen basic education across Oyo State.
Mr. Tosin Aderibigbe, the Inspector General of Education, described the summer school as a model worth replicating across other councils. He said it helps to bridge learning gaps and prepares students adequately for the new academic session.
Mrs. Morenike Adeniran, Education Secretary of Ibadan South West, said the programme recorded strong participation with students exposed to academics, ICT, arts and sports.
The event witnessed prize giving and the presentation of honorary awards. A major highlight was the honouring award for the Best Summer Coaching Student who was installed as One Day Chairman of Ibadan South West Local Government. Other students and teachers with outstanding performance also received awards for excellence in academics, sports, arts and leadership.
In his address, Hon. Kehinde Akande said the summer school was aimed at reducing idleness during holidays and discovering talents among young people in the council. He pledged that the local government will continue to invest in education and youth-focused programmes that add value to families in Ibadan South West.
Parents, political functionaries, career officers and community leaders present commended the council for organizing a successful and impactful programme.
