In a determined effort to tackle the rising cases of cultism and drug abuse among teenagers—particularly secondary school students—the Executive Chairman of Egbeda Local Government, Hon. Sanda Sikiru Oyedele, has launched a sensitization campaign within the council area.
Represented by the Director of Education and Social Services, Mrs. Bosede Ilugbaro, the chairman led the awareness campaign which brought together students, teachers, and key stakeholders to discuss the dangers of cultism and substance abuse.

During the event, Hon. Oyedele emphasized the destructive consequences of drug addiction and cult involvement, warning that these vices often derail young people’s future, leading to prosecution, mental health issues, and even untimely death. He cautioned students against seeking artificial solutions to personal challenges, as these often lead to more severe problems.
The campaign, titled “War Against Cultism and Drug Abuse: Training the Trainers”, featured a keynote address by Dr. Olufemi Michael from the Department of Political Science, University of Ibadan. Dr. Michael shed light on the alarming increase in drug use among students, citing statistics from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Oyo State Police Command. He highlighted how drug abuse is linked to criminal acts such as rape, theft, and violence.
Dr. Michael further explained that the initiative aims not only to educate but to empower students to become peer educators. He referenced the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, FNSE, who has warned that students found loitering during school hours will face strict penalties.
He also urged parents to take a more active role in monitoring their children’s behavior, stressing that early intervention is crucial to preventing addiction and its consequences.
The well-attended event included students from various public schools, Director of Egbeda L.I.E, Mrs. Ilelaboye, her deputy Mr. Alao, Mrs. Ilugbaro (DESS), Mrs. Falana (DDESS), teachers, and other invited guests.
