The Oyo State Fire Services Agency on Friday averted a major gas explosion following a leakage from a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) tanker at the Olodo Bank area of Ibadan.
According to the agency, the distress call was received at about 9:15 a.m. through a telephone report made by an engineer identified as Olaojo concerning the gas leakage incident.

Firefighters led by Chief Fire Superintendent (CFS) Adekola Fisayo were immediately deployed to the scene.

On arrival, the emergency responders discovered that a gas tanker bearing registration number XE712BNY, registered in Rivers State and loaded with 15 tonnes of LPG, had developed a leakage while discharging its contents.
The fire service personnel swiftly commenced containment operations by spraying water around the affected environment to prevent ignition and minimise the risk of an explosion while efforts were made to repair the leaking valve.
The agency disclosed that three persons were rescued alive from the scene and subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
Normal social and commercial activities later resumed in the area after the situation was brought under control.
The fire crew reportedly returned to the station at about 2:22 p.m. and remained on standby for further emergency response operations.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser on Fire Services Reform and Chairman of the agency, Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, urged residents to prioritise safety measures by ensuring the availability of portable fire extinguishers in homes, shops and business premises.
He also stressed the need for regular training of staff and business owners on the proper use of fire extinguishers to reduce fire-related emergencies.
The agency advised members of the public to promptly report fire and rescue emergencies through its emergency lines: 08067439223, 08054353501 or the toll-free number 615.
