The Oyo State Government on Monday held an Independence Day Walk to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary, with the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Musibau Babatunde, leading top government officials and other stakeholders in the exercise.
The walk, coordinated by the Ministry of Youth and Sports under the leadership of the Honourable Commissioner, Hon. Wasilat Adegoke, witnessed the participation of members of the State Executive Council, heads of agencies, political leaders and government workers.
Joining the SSG and Hon. Adegoke were the Commissioner for Public Works and Transport, Hon. Mojeed Mogbonjubola, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Wasiu Olatubosun, as well as heads of agencies and parastatals.
Also leading the contingent of government workers was the Head of Service, Dr. (Mrs) Adenike Ayobami Fasina, who mobilized civil servants in large numbers for the walk.
The Independence Walk, which was held in a carnival-like atmosphere, was aimed at promoting unity, patriotism, fitness and national pride among residents of the state as Nigeria marks its independence.
Speaking at the event, the SSG, Prof. Babatunde, described the walk as a symbolic exercise that reflects the spirit of togetherness and collective resolve to build a greater Oyo State and a stronger Nigeria.
He prayed for continuous strength for the party and charged all members and supporters to work assiduously towards ensuring victory for the APM in all elections, including Governor Seyi Makinde for President and Hon. Bimbo Adekanmbi.
He commended the Ministry of Youth and Sports for putting the event together and lauded the massive turnout of government officials and workers.
In her remarks, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Wasilat Adegoke, thanked all participants for honouring the invitation and said the walk was part of activities lined up to celebrate Nigeria’s independence in Oyo State.
She noted that the initiative was also geared towards encouraging healthy living and fostering a sense of belonging among youths and the general populace.
Hon. Adegoke however used the opportunity to invite all youths across Oyo State to join His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, for the wider Independence Day celebration on October 1st at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan.
According to her, the grand celebration will provide an avenue for youths to connect with the administration and celebrate Nigeria’s unity and progress.
The walk recorded an impressive turnout and ended with excitement and solidarity songs.
