The Oyo State Fire Services Agency on Wednesday successfully averted potential disasters following two separate petrol tanker accidents along major highways in Ibadan, preventing possible explosions and saving properties worth millions of naira.

In the first incident, the agency received a distress call at exactly 9:03 a.m. on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, through a telephone report by Mr. Adelakun, alerting authorities to a petrol tanker accident along the Ibadan–Oyo Expressway at Ojoo, Ibadan.

Fire personnel, led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS) Bamidele Samsudeen, were immediately deployed to the scene. On arrival, it was discovered that a trailer tanker with registration number KJA 67 XF (Lagos), loaded with 40,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), had swerved off the road, posing a serious fire risk.

The firemen swiftly swung into action, applying chemical foam compounds to neutralize the flammability of the spilled fuel, thereby preventing ignition. The operation was jointly carried out with the Federal Fire Service, Ibadan Command, while the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA) provided effective security and traffic control.

No casualty was recorded, and properties valued at millions of naira were saved. The firefighting appliance returned to the station at 3:56 p.m. and remained on standby.

Similarly, at about 5:10 p.m. the same day, the agency responded to another petrol tanker accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway at the Methodist Toll Gate, Ibadan, following a distress call received from Mr. Adesina Ismail.

The rescue team, led by ACFS Adeniyi, arrived to find a trailer tanker with registration number A143 XA (Osun), loaded with 33,000 litres of PMS, which had lost control while in motion and fallen into a nearby ditch, with fuel gushing out.

Firefighters immediately launched a coordinated containment operation by deploying chemical foam to control the spillage and suppress flammable vapours. The swift and professional response successfully prevented the incident from escalating into a fire outbreak.

Normal vehicular movement was restored shortly after, with no casualty recorded. The presence of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) was commended for providing safety cover during the operation. The firefighting appliance returned to the station at 11:07 p.m. and remained on standby.

Reacting to the incidents, the Special Adviser on Fire Services Reform and Chairman of the Agency urged motorists, especially tanker drivers, to exercise caution on the roads and strictly observe fire and road safety regulations to prevent avoidable accidents.

Members of the public were also encouraged to promptly report fire incidents and emergencies through the agency’s control room lines: 08067439223, 08054353501, or 615, while providing accurate location details for swift response.
